The historic in-park lodges — Lake McDonald, Many Glacier Hotel, Apgar Village — are stunning structures with paper-thin walls, dated rooms, and shared bathrooms in some wings. They book out 12 to 13 months ahead and run $250 to $500 a night for a double bed and a sink. Glamping in Whitefish, Columbia Falls, or out toward Polebridge buys you more square footage, a private bath, often a hot tub, and a 15- to 45-minute drive to the West Entrance.
Glacier glamping splits sharply by which side of the Divide you sleep on. The west side runs on the Flathead Valley economy — Whitefish is a working ski town with summer credentials, Columbia Falls hugs the river closer to the entrance, and Kalispell anchors the cheaper cabin clusters 35 minutes out. The east side is quieter and more rustic; St. Mary and Browning sit on and near the Blackfeet Reservation with fewer beds and longer drives between them. North Fork — Polebridge and the gravel road in — is genuinely off-grid country.
This guide is built for first-timers planning the Going-to-the-Sun drive, hikers staging for Grinnell Glacier or Iceberg Lake out of Many Glacier, families using Whitefish as a base, and photographers chasing the sharper light on the East Side. Pick your side before you book your bed.

Best for…
Couples
Whitefish anchors the romance options — riverfront and lakeside cabins with hot tubs, a real downtown for dinner, brewery scene. Polebridge offers off-grid intimacy with no cell signal. Flathead River frontage between Columbia Falls and West Glacier hits the sweet spot for privacy plus park access.
Families
Whitefish has the kid economy: lake beach, bike paths, easy restaurants, the resort gondola in summer. Multi-bedroom cabins cluster around Columbia Falls and Hungry Horse. Glacier's hiker shuttle along Going-to-the-Sun helps split groups by ability so the teens can keep climbing while younger kids turn back.
Budget
Kalispell cabin clusters undercut Whitefish by $50 to $150 a night and add 10 minutes of drive time. Hungry Horse and Coram on US-2 are cheaper still. East-side properties around Browning and the south end of St. Mary run cheaper than the west-side average — more rustic, longer drives to the busy west-side trails.
Luxury
Whitefish Lake and the Big Mountain area hold a few high-end resort and luxury-cabin options with full kitchens, hot tubs, and ski-in winter access. Polebridge has a small set of rustic-luxe off-grid stays for guests who want design and isolation. East-side ranch properties around St. Mary and Babb offer working-ranch glamping with horses and big sky.
Pet-friendly
Glacier is one of the strictest pet parks in the system — no dogs on trails, no dogs in the backcountry, leashed only on roads, parking lots, and developed campgrounds. So most of the day, the dog stays at the cabin. Most Whitefish, Columbia Falls, and Kalispell cabin rentals are pet-friendly with fees.
Stargazing & off-grid
Glacier and Waterton together are the world's first cross-border International Dark Sky Park (full certification 2021). Polebridge and the North Fork sit in roughly Bortle 1 territory — no light pollution, full Milky Way most of the summer. The east side near Two Medicine and St. Mary is excellent. Whitefish and Kalispell carry some town glow.
Know before you go
Best time to visit
Mid-July through early September is the only stretch when Going-to-the-Sun Road is reliably open end-to-end — Logan Pass typically opens between mid-June and early July depending on snow, and the alpine section closes again in mid-October. Late June gets you snowmelt waterfalls but high-elevation roads and trails are still gated. September after Labor Day drops crowds sharply with crisp weather and early larch color. October through May, most through-driving is closed; only low-elevation segments stay plowed.
Closest park entrance
West Glacier is the busiest — fastest access to Lake McDonald, Apgar, and the western half of Going-to-the-Sun. St. Mary anchors the East Entrance and the road to Many Glacier and the Blackfeet side. Polebridge accesses the North Fork via a long gravel road. Two Medicine sits in the southeast and runs quieter than Many Glacier. Many Glacier itself is a separate dead-end road off the east side.
Booking lead time
July and August peak dates book out 6 to 12 months ahead, especially anything within 20 minutes of West Glacier. East-side inventory is much thinner than west-side — if you want St. Mary, Babb, or Browning area in summer, lock it down by January.
Permits & reservations
Important update for 2026: the timed-entry vehicle reservation system has been discontinued — no reservation is required at Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, North Fork, or Two Medicine. You still need the standard $35 vehicle entrance pass (good 7 days). The park is piloting a ticketed shuttle to Logan Pass instead, with tickets via recreation.gov; rolling 60-day-out windows started May 2, 2026, and next-day tickets release at 7pm MDT starting June 30. Logan Pass parking is capped at 3 hours from July 1, 2026. Areas may be temporarily closed when they hit capacity.
Cell & wifi
Whitefish, Kalispell, and Columbia Falls have full LTE. The park interior is essentially a dead zone — no signal at Logan Pass, Many Glacier, or along most of Going-to-the-Sun. East side is patchy around St. Mary and zero at Polebridge. Most cabin rentals offer wifi but speeds vary by how far out the property sits.
If you have 3 days near Glacier, here's how we'd spend them
Going-to-the-Sun Road west-to-east, hike at Logan Pass
Leave the West Entrance early — the road climbs 3,400 feet in 32 miles. Stop at Lake McDonald, the Loop, and Bird Woman Falls overlook. At Logan Pass, walk the Hidden Lake Overlook boardwalk; under the new 3-hour parking cap, you'll either grab a Logan Pass shuttle ticket or move on. Drop down the east side to St. Mary for dinner.
Many Glacier: Grinnell Glacier or Iceberg Lake
Drive into Many Glacier early — parking fills by 8am. Grinnell Glacier (about 11 miles round-trip with the boat shortcut, 7 miles of climbing) is the headliner; Iceberg Lake (9.7 miles round-trip, gentler) is the alternative. Note Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and the Many Glacier campground stay closed through the 2025 season for water-system construction wrapping mid-May 2026.
Two Medicine and back to Whitefish
Two Medicine sees a fraction of Many Glacier traffic but holds its own — Running Eagle Falls is a 0.6-mile walk, the Twin Falls boat-and-hike combo runs about 7.5 miles. Loop back via East Glacier and US-2 along the south boundary, then unwind in Whitefish — brewery, lake swim, downtown dinner.
Frequently asked questions
Is there glamping inside Glacier National Park?▾
Not in the modern glamping sense. The in-park lodging stock is historic lodges (Lake McDonald, Many Glacier Hotel, Rising Sun Motor Inn, Apgar Village), backcountry chalets (Sperry, Granite Park), and frontcountry campgrounds. Rooms in the historic lodges are small, walls are thin, some have shared baths, and rates run $250 to $500 a night. Glamping properties — yurts, safari tents, hot-tub cabins — sit just outside the park boundary in West Glacier, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Polebridge, and around St. Mary.
How close to the entrance can I glamp?▾
On the west side, several cabin and tent operations sit within 5 to 15 minutes of the West Entrance along US-2 and the Flathead River. Columbia Falls properties run about 15 to 25 minutes out. Whitefish averages 25 to 35 minutes. On the east side, St. Mary properties sit within 5 minutes of the St. Mary Entrance, and Babb is 10 minutes from the Many Glacier turnoff. Polebridge for North Fork access is about an hour of gravel from Columbia Falls.
What's the best month to glamp at Glacier?▾
Late July through August is peak — Going-to-the-Sun is fully open, all trails are clear, alpine wildflowers peak in late July. Early September is the sweet spot: weather still settled, crowds drop noticeably after Labor Day, and the new Logan Pass shuttle pilot eases parking pressure. Late June gets you waterfalls at full volume but Logan Pass usually isn't open yet. October through May, most of the park is inaccessible by car.
How far ahead should I book?▾
For July and August: book 6 to 12 months out, longer for anything walkable to West Glacier or for east-side Many Glacier access. The historic lodges open booking 13 months ahead and sell out within hours. June and September shoulder dates open up a few months out. Off-grid Polebridge cabins are limited — book by January for summer. East-side inventory is thinner than west-side, so apply more lead time to St. Mary and Babb.
How much does it cost?▾
Plan on $135 to $250 a night for a basic cabin or yurt within 30 minutes of an entrance, $250 to $450 for a hot-tub cabin or higher-end glamping setup in Whitefish or near West Glacier, and $500 to $850 for ranch-style or design-led properties on either side. Add the $35 park entrance fee (7-day vehicle pass; $25 in winter). East-side properties around Browning and St. Mary tend to undercut west-side rates.
Do I need a vehicle reservation for Going-to-the-Sun Road in 2026?▾
No — the timed-entry vehicle reservation system has been discontinued for 2026. You can drive Going-to-the-Sun, Many Glacier, North Fork, and Two Medicine without a reservation, just the standard $35 vehicle entrance pass. The replacement is a ticketed shuttle to Logan Pass and a 3-hour parking cap at the Logan Pass lot starting July 1, 2026. Shuttle tickets go through recreation.gov on rolling 60-day-out and next-day windows. Areas may close temporarily when they hit capacity.
West side or East side — which is better?▾
West side wins on logistics: bigger lodging stock, more food and gas, faster to Lake McDonald and the Going-to-the-Sun west ramp, an actual airport (FCA in Kalispell). East side wins on light, drama, and quiet — the peaks rise sharper from the plains, sunrises are exceptional, and the road into Many Glacier reaches the headline glacier hikes. Most first-timers do west-side base + one east-side day. If you're chasing photography or solitude, sleep east.
Whitefish or Columbia Falls — which is better?▾
Columbia Falls is closer (15 to 20 minutes to West Entrance vs Whitefish's 25 to 35), cheaper on average, and quieter. It's a working town with the river running through it. Whitefish is a full ski-town-turned-summer-destination — restaurants, breweries, a lake with public beach, downtown shopping, the airport 20 minutes south. Pick Columbia Falls if the park is the whole point. Pick Whitefish if you want a town to come home to each night.
